Vasco da Gama Bridge, Lisbon

Commercial management of Marine Works from foundations to installation of decks for the cable stay bridge, Central Viaduct and South Viaduct. Including spiral welding of 1.7m diameter pile casings, casting of caissons, piers and 2,000T deck beams for the Central Viaduct together with marine vessel contracts for piling and heavy lifts.

Claims – impact of Kobe Earthquake in Japan on seismic design of Vasco da Gama Bridge. Kobe Earthquake had the largest vertical component measured at that time. A fault line that had destroyed Lisbon in 1775 ran between the pylons of the cable stay bridge. Foundation design had to be re-evaluated resulting in a delay of approximately 10 months in placing concrete in pile casings. The bridge opened on time.
